Developed by Fondazione LIA, these Guidelines aim to support publishers and other stakeholders in aligning their practices with the requirements of the EAA, in force since June 28th, 2025. They outline practical steps to embed accessibility from editorial planning and production to distribution, communication, and staff training thus fostering a sustainable, inclusive, and innovative publishing ecosystem. By embracing the Born Accessible principle, publishers can ensure that every digital publication is accessible to all readers from the outset, contributing to a more equitable European publishing market.
The document begins by presenting the legislative framework and explaining the impact of the EAA on the publishing value chain, including obligations related to e-book production, distribution, and accessibility metadata. It highlights how accessible publishing benefits not only readers with print impairments but also the broader audience, improving quality, discoverability, and user experience for everyone.
Building on findings from the APACE Survey on Skills Gap (2024), the Guidelines identify the areas where publishers most need support, particularly in training, workflow adaptation, and quality assurance. They provide detailed guidance on assessing a company’s current accessibility level, designing and implementing an accessibility roadmap, and fostering an internal culture of accessibility. Specific roadmaps are outlined for production, distribution, and communication departments, along with recommendations for continuous training, monitoring progress, and maintaining compliance over time.
Ultimately, the document underscores that accessibility is a continuous commitment requiring collaboration among publishers, accessibility experts, technology providers, and end users.
